Dr Thomas

Why Didn't They Ask Evans

Dr Thomas is a middle-aged physician and a measured witness to the cliff death of Alex Pritchard. His practical manner, first seen on the golf course and then at the scene, carries into his inquest testimony: he reports what he observed while distinguishing it from what he cannot know.

Identity and Temperament

Dr Thomas has grey hair and a cheerful red face. His golf is as controlled as his later testimony: he avoids a full swing, plays short, straight shots down the middle, and commonly beats more brilliant but erratic players. The contrast establishes him as a steady, unshowy figure rather than a dramatic one.

The Discovery at the Cliff

While golfing with Bobby Jones, Dr Thomas is called over to look at a dark heap roughly forty feet below. The two men climb down together, with the more athletic Bobby helping the doctor over the rocks. They find a man who is unconscious but still breathing. Dr Thomas examines him and concludes that there is no hope of recovery; he then leaves to get help, with Bobby remaining beside the man.

Testimony at the Inquest

At the inquest into Alex Pritchard’s death, held the following day, Dr Thomas confirms that the man was still alive when found and describes leaving to summon assistance. Asked how the fall occurred, he considers the rising sea mist and the path’s abrupt turn inland: the man may have failed to notice the edge and walked over it. He says the injuries are explained by the fall and reports no signs that a third party caused them.

Dr Thomas does not claim to settle whether the death was accidental or intentional. He accepts that suicide is possible but says he cannot determine whether the man walked over the edge or jumped. His careful limits matter as much as his proposed explanation: his evidence makes an accidental fall plausible without presenting it as certain.

Narrative Role

Dr Thomas links the discovery of the dying man to the formal inquiry that follows. His calm, qualified account supplies the inquest with a physical explanation for the fall, yet preserves uncertainty about the dead man’s intentions. The same restraint that marks his golf—straight, reliable play rather than brilliance—also defines his role as a witness who reports evidence without claiming more than it can establish.
